In discussion with DJ Fett Burger on “Homework” by Daft Punk (1996).
How did „”Homework”“ found its way to your years? Was it by coincidence, or did you seek it out on some recommendation?
It was totally by a coincidence. I think it was back in the fall or winter of 1996 or something, I can’t really remember. My brother and me were listening to the radio one evening in the kitchen. Back then, we always listened to the radio when we were eating or hanging out, usually making drawings. In Norway around the time it was a channel called NRK P3. It’s still around, and it was one of the main National broadcasting channels. There were three of them. NRK P1 the original, NRK P2 mostly for culture, and NRK P3 for the younger generation. This station was aiming for a younger audience – but in a very different way than today. They used to have a broad selection of different programs. My favorite was the programs in the morning and afternoon because they had a lot of intelligent humor and also sometimes pushed things a bit further in terms of what was socially acceptable, at least back then. In the evenings, six days a week, they had different shows dedicated to music belonging to a certain scene or niche. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday it was Roxrevyen, which later became Karlsens Kabin, and Hal 9000. Karlsens Kabin mainly covered indie music, but also electronic music. Hal 9000 with Harald Are Lund was a broad selection of rock, electronic and experimental music with a very open minded approach. A lot of older things got played as well. Friday, it was National Rap Show with Tommy Tee, Hip Hop concentration mostly on early nineties East Coast Hip Hop. And then, Saturday, it was DJ Dust with Funk and Disco, DJ Strangefruit with his eclectic selections, and later in the evening DJ Abstract with mostly House and Techno. On Sunday it was Chill Out with DJ Friendly in the morning and Ambolt on Sunday evening, which was dedicated to Metal and harder Rock. Overall, NPK P3 had a pretty broad selection of music from different scenes. It provided a great musical education for when you are young and from a small Norwegian town. These programs were so dedicated to their scene, they always played a lot of demos or unreleased music. Karlsens Kabin and Hal 9000 played some of our oldest music, even things only made on CD-R, so it was a very supportive scene on the radio back then. You can just imagine how crazy it was for us back then being played on national radio!
OK, now back to the question. First time I heard something from Daft Punk was through Karlsens Kabin or Roxrevyen as it was called then. It was a mid-week evening, and suddenly “Around The World” was on the radio. This was before it was a big hit, and before people knew what Daft Punk was. It was probably a radio promo that was played or something like that.
It just blew my mind at the time. Back then it was so cool, different, even strange. Right after they played the song, they said the name and title of the song. And one second later I forgot it all, except the song. But a few months later, Daft Punk was everywhere with “Da Funk” and “Around The World” on MTV all day long.
Do you like the album as a whole, or are there personal highlights, or even tracks you do not like as much?
I like the album as a whole. Before when it was new, you could hear the hits everywhere, so I was pretty familiar with them. I remember when my brother and I got the album. It was an interesting listening experience, since most of the tracks were actually not hits or mainstream material. For instance, “Rollin’ & Scratchin’, “High Fidelity”, “Rock’n Roll”, “Indo Silver Club”, “Alive” or the intro “Wdpk837 Fm.” But, since everything was on the album, it just became associated with something mainstream.
Now it’s a classic of course, but back then, it was the combination of making something catchy, a bit more demanding, and for a scene. In this case, obviously House and Techno. You can hardly say that something is demanding or edgy on the album anymore, because of its place in music history. I think there still are some tracks that are edgy. Back then, for a 15-year-old kid without any experience, this was a big and new thing. Just imagine what influence this had. I remember even in the beginning, I didn’t like “Rollin’ & Scratchin.’ However, it changed after I gained more of an understanding for where the song and its influences came from.
For me, the whole album is a personal highlight. There are different vibes to the tracks and your mood shifts. Some songs are more uplifting, some more mellow, and some noisy or slow. But everything is a favorite of mine in different ways. They all have different elements of influences for me in terms of musical education. The whole album is a favorite of mine. Everything, from how the sound is mixed, the way Daft Punk samples, the artwork aesthetic, the music videos and Daft Punk’s anonymity at the time. It’s a whole package, and I embraced it all. Im Gespräch mit Thomas Meinecke über “Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band” von Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band (1976).
Beginnen wir mit einer simplen Frage. Wie bist Du auf Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band gekommen?
Den Namen habe ich zuerst in Andy Warhols Magazin Interview gelesen, ich würde mal tippen so 1977 oder 78. Da gab es damals eine sehr gute Musikkolumne von Glenn O’Brien, und Interview war in den Zeiten, als es noch nicht so richtig losgegangen war mit dem Hedonismus in der Subkultur, ein Zentralorgan. Man konnte sich sowohl über P-Funk informieren als auch über frühe Ausformungen von New Wave, Pere Ubu, Richard Hell, Blondie usw. Diese ganze Szene wurde natürlich sofort quasi vor der Haustür chronistenmäßig mitgeschrieben. Hier in Deutschland war von der Informationsseite in Sachen interessanter Rock, Pop, Soul und sonst welche Musik nicht viel geboten. Es gab damals die Zeitschrift Sounds, dort glänzte dann manchmal Ingeborg Schober mit einem Artikel über Kevin Ayers oder Roxy Music-Ableger, oder La Düsseldorf und Neu!, es war noch die Zeit bevor Leute wie Diedrich Diederichsen dort geschrieben haben, oder Hans Keller, die das Andere dann auch aufgegriffen haben. Wenn man aber ein bisschen mehr wissen wollte, fand ich es echt schwierig, und ich bin sowieso Warholianer und fand in Interview eine schöne Quelle. Und da wurde dann im Zusammenhang mit ganz anderen merkwürdigen Musikformen, ich glaube es war tatsächlich gerade etwas mit P-Funk geschehen, Dr. Buzzard erwähnt. Und wie das dort beschrieben wurde hat bei mir sofort eine Sehnsucht losgetreten. Ich war eben jemand, der auch damals gerne Disco hörte, ich hörte aber auch gerne Punk und mochte das Gebrochene in Disco. Ich fand den Camp-Aspekt, den man als Leser von Andy Warhols Interview sowieso beherrschte oder erkennen konnte, an Popmusik immer sehr reizvoll. Das Zitathafte, das Vorformulierte. Und es schien mir in der Beschreibung dessen, was diese Band machen würde, als wäre das so eine Art afroamerikanische Ausgabe von Roxy Music. Eine dandyeske, hedonistische Formation, die über das, was man von anderen, sehr eleganten Formationen wie Chic kannte, hinausging. Und so war es dann auch. Ich habe mich auf die Suche gemacht, man konnte über Import die Sachen schon irgendwie erwischen, und da kam dann gerade das zweite Album „Meets King Pennett“ raus als ich das las. Das habe ich mir gekauft und dann das erste gleich danach, was ja schon 1976 erschienen war. Und 79 kam dann ja gleich noch „Goes To Washington“ raus. Das sind die drei ganz großen Alben dieser Band. Es gab später noch ein etwas verunglücktes, wo auch die Besetzung nicht mehr dieselbe war. Und es gab natürlich eine ganz große Folgegeschichte ins etwas leichter Verständliche, mit Kid Creole & The Coconuts, den Coconuts und Coati Mundi usw. Diese ganze New York-Paris-Achse auf dem ZE-Label, wo es dann rüberging bis zu James Chance, der dann plötzlich bei den Aural Exciters mitspielte. Und plötzlich mischte sich das, was man Post Punk nannte, mit Disco, was ja heute ganz modisch und modern ist, diese ganze Post Punk/Disco-Connection. Und das Ganze kündigte sich mit Dr. Buzzard schon an.
Wenn Du damals über Interview davon erfahren hast, ist das ja schon ein Erstkontakt, der kontextuell vorbelastet ist. Konnte die Musik denn einlösen, was Du Dir davon erhofft hattest?
Ja, es hat es total eingelöst und ist sogar noch darüber hinausgegangen. Ich fand es, um mal den etwas merkwürdigen Begriff von Ornette Coleman auszuleihen, „harmolodisch“. Ich hatte das Gefühl hier ist eine musikalische Theorie am Start, die ich gar nicht in Worte fassen kann, aber der ich völlig fasziniert lausche. Und nicht nur lausche, zu der konnte man ja auch ganz toll tanzen. Es hörte sich an wie wenn man zwei Radiosender gleichzeitig hört. Die Anleihen bei leicht verständlicher Musik wie Swing, was ja die Camp- (schwule) Subkultur schon seit Jahrzehnten vorgemacht hatte, wie man spießige Elemente wie Glenn Miller gegen den Strich lesen konnte zu einem Soundtrack der Dissidenz, der sexuellen insbesondere, die ja auch immer eine politische war. Es war ja damals sowieso gang und gäbe, dass Disco sehr zickige und spießige Swing-Elemente rekontextualisierte, resignifizierte, völlig neu ins Feld führte. Aber hier ging es noch darüber hinaus, hier war es tonal sowas von komplex und schwierig. Versuch mal so eine Melodie nachzusingen, die diese unglaubliche Sängerin Cory Daye da immer zu singen hat bei denen, das ist unglaublich komplex und wurde später bei Kid Creole auch runtergerechnet auf einfachere, und dann vielleicht auch massentauglichere Formeln. Ich erinnere das so, dass mich das echt umgehauen hat. Ich fand den Sound der Bassdrum unglaublich. Den habe ich eigentlich erst wieder bei Theo Parrish gehört. Eine große, runde, weiche, unverhältnismäßig laut abgemischte Bassdrum, die dann sogar in Stücken wirkt, die gar nicht Disco sind, so wie bei „Sunshower“, das vor kurzem von M.I.A. noch mal als Sample auf die Tanzfläche geführt wurde. Unglaubliche Sounds, unglaublich viel Arbeit. Ich habe irgendwo mal gelesen, 600 Stunden waren sie im Studio fürs erste Album und haben dann wohl trotzdem von der Plattenfirma kein weiteres Backing erfahren. Sie haben gesehen, „Ah, die Platte steht ja schon in den Läden!“, und hatten davon noch gar nichts gewusst. Aber sie wirkt so, wenn man sie sich anhört, von einer solchen Elaboriertheit und Sophistication, wie man es selten bei Plattenproduktionen hat. Read the rest of this entry »
Als die die erste Großphase von House in Chicago, vertreten durch die ehemaligen Speerspitzen DJ International und Trax, mit den 80ern endete, kam eine längere Zeit der Umorientierung, die rückblickend sehr chaotisch war. Mit den alten Partnern wollten die Künstler nichts mehr zu tun haben, es hatte einfach zu viele schiefe Verträge gegeben, und die anfänglichen Chartsausflüge der Pioniere erwiesen sich zusehends als flüchtig. Diejenigen, die schon dort gewesen waren, kamen mit prahlerischen Berichten zurück, doch eigentlich war die Tür bereits wieder zu, und man konnte sie mit Unterschubladen wie Hip House u. ä. nicht wieder öffnen, und die vormalig einladenden Gesten aus Übersee gingen jetzt in Richtung Detroit. Ein paar unverzagte Jungs jedoch beriefen sich nun auf die Ursprungsqualitäten von Chicago House, und marschierten schnurstracks dorthin zurück. Die Entschlackungskur ging von Labels wie Dance Mania und Cajual/Relief aus und machte schnell die Runde. Die verdrogte Leidenschaft und Experimentierfreude Ron Hardys stand abermals Pate, und dessen radikal funktionale Tape Loops wurden in Erinnerung zurückgerufen. Demzufolge wurde die Musik zu Tracks abgebaut, monoton und unbehauen, billigst produziert, und Disco, die Grundlage des Ganzen, wurde höchstens in abstrakten Fetzen eingearbeitet. Kurzum, House zerlegte sich selbst in seine Einzelteile, nahm ein paar Erkenntnisse der noch jungen Techno-Geschichte mit dazu, und wurde mit äußerst reduziertem Aufwand erneut auf die Reise geschickt, in unzähligen Versionen. Und auch wenn haarsträubende Pressungen und luschige Programmierung noch heute den meisten DJs zu schaffen machen, das Gefühl der Stücke war wieder echt und zwingend, und die Intensität so offensichtlich, dass die Klassiker dieser Zeit erstaunlich gut gealtert sind und heute im Feldzug gegen Plugin-Sauberkeit immer noch eine gern genommene Alternative und Inspirationsquelle bieten. Einer der Gewinner dieser zweiten Chicago House-Welle war DJ Sneak, der damals noch bei Gramophone Records arbeitete, dem Epizentrum der Geschehnisse, und sich dort wohl eingehend Gedanken darüber machte, wie er zum Fortgang des Sounds beitragen wollte. Seine zweite Platte von 1994, die Beetz-N-Noisez EP, hatte dann schon alles vorformuliert, was ihn später für lange Zeit zum Star machte: noch vertretbare Reste von Trackstyle-Booty-Sexismen, Disco, in rhythmisch eingesetzten, bis zur Unkenntlichkeit entstellten Sampleschlaufen, die nur selten länger als zwei Takte Zeit hatten, und allerlei anderer Krach. Was da an Einzelelementen zu hören war, war keineswegs neu, aber wie er es zusammensetzte schon. Es ging nur noch um den direkten Weg, alle ablenkenden Schnörkel im Arrangement waren entfernt, der Rest wurde solange ins Hirn gehämmert, bis man sich den Signalen nicht mehr entziehen konnte. Zudem vermied Sneak den laxen Umgang seiner Weggefährten mit dem Produktionsprozess. Seine Tracks klangen dick, klar, akzentuiert, ihr Klang war neben der Struktur ein weiterer entschiedener Bestandteil der Wirkung. Dass er aber auch ohne den Sample-Baukasten auskam bewies „Fear The World“, ein hundsgemeiner, dunkler Brocken von einem Track, der nur mit einer hypnotischen Tonschlaufe und Start-Stop-Beats ausgestattet so beängstigend durch den Club walzt, dass die Flächentraditionalisten am spießigen Ende von House sich vermutlich wünschen, er wäre nie erschaffen worden. Denn House kann eigentlich alles, auch wenn es scheint, dass es heutzutage nicht mehr jeder wissen soll.
Irgendwie kam House in Deutschland lange Jahre nicht in die Gänge. Nix Massenbewegung, nix Exportpotential, nix Sponsorenzielgruppe. Es gab zwar ausreichend Clubs, DJs und Produzenten, die sich von Anfang an mit House beschäftigten und den Sound hegten und pflegten, aber man studierte erstmal eingehend was da kistenweise importiert wurde und verschob den eigenen Einsatz auf später. Die Italiener hatten sich da schon längst zusammengeklaubt, was sie für die sonnigen Fantasiewelten ihrer Großclubs brauchten, in Holland und Belgien wollte man sich schon bald von dem amerikanischem Ausgangsmaterial emanzipieren, und in Großbritannien atomisierte die Hype-Presse bereits alle verfügbaren Stilmöglichkeiten zu Subgenres. In Deutschland hingegen wurde noch eine Weile analysiert, bis sinnigerweise der Dancefloor-Ableger vom Diskursstichwortgeber L’Age D’or diese Phase für beendet erklärte und sich alsbald beherzt daran machte, lose orientiert an der noch relativ jungen House-Historie anderer Länder, eine Reihe von sehr eigenständigen und funktionstüchtigen Veröffentlichungen zu starten. „Brian de Palma“, passend benannt nach dem Regisseur mit den dollsten Nachtclubsequenzen, ist sowohl der erste Höhepunkt als auch eine wegweisende Schnittstelle dieser Entwicklung. Hans Nieswandt, der damals in Worten wie kein Anderer auf den Punkt brachte was an House so wunderbar ist, Eric D. Clark, der immigrierte Glam-Faktor mit dem irritierenden Soul, und Justus Köhncke, der romantische Raketenwissenschaftler des Ganzen, wollten nicht länger zuschauen und nahmen sich ihre gesammelten Nightlife-Erfahrungen, ihre erheblichen Plattensammlungen, ihre durchdefinierten Popforderungen und ihren unverbrauchten Enthusiasmus für die Sache an sich, und bauten mit taufrischem Idealismus an ihrer Musik. Das allzu Offensichtliche wurde dabei vermieden, Mel Tormé oder Steely Dan kamen in die Samplebank, und nicht schon wieder Loleatta Holloway. Und obwohl hier und da DJ Pierre oder DJ Sneak als Inspirationsquelle hervorlugten, bekam man ihn hin, den eigenen Sound. Eine elastische Funkyness, eine lässige Dosis smarter Referenzen, und eine grundsympathische Einstellung im Umgang mit dem Groove. Mit jedem ihrer späteren Alben vergrößerten sie genauso schlüssig und schlau den Spielraum, den sie sich mit diesem Album eröffneten, mit oftmals ebenso sperrigen wie überraschenden Resultaten zwischen Can-Studio und surrealer Charts-Kurzkarriere. Aber diese Verbindung von Kopf und Tanzfläche war nicht mehr ganz so ausschlaggebend, und ich habe das vermisst. Die weitere Laufbahn der drei nach dem Ende von Whirlpool Productions gestaltete sich dann gleichermaßen erwartet wie unerwartet, und es ist gut zu wissen, dass sie allesamt immer noch voll drin sind in der Chose.
