I do not remember why I did this mix, but after a string of mixes revisiting my past days, here at last was one with then (mostly) new music I played in clubs. I recorded it for Ali Tillett’s Warm booking agency. I do not recall if there were talks about me joining them of if it was just one of many favours I did for friends and friendly people asking me for mixes. If you think I tend to care more about recording mixes than my actual DJ career you are probably right. The mix title is probably me making fun of that. Contained here is Tuomi – The Expense Of Spirit, the third release of the label Macro which I co-founded with Stefan Goldmann a year earlier. I just wanted to mention that.

It’s been too long, but now the Druffalo Hit Squad decided to skip the distractions (and there are so many!) and get back to duty. The result is a most exquisite invasion of your audio senses, laden with strings, drama and a thorough analysis of today’s society and the detours of love. We dedicate this Druffmix edition to Katherine Hamnett and Super Hector.

Dear me, I was recording so many mixes with early 90s house in 2007/08, it almost feels like I was trying to ignite a revival all by myself. The 90s house revival eventually happened not much later, but then I was interested in other music and did not care anymore. I had all the records so I probably could have done a lot of gigs milking the monentum, but hey. My timing is often so bad, it is almost proverbial.

This is the sequel to the mix “The Boo In My Boogie” as featured in newsletter Finnished 0002. Feel free to check the backstory there. The title is the other half of the quote by two elderly George Michael fans from a documentary about him. The music? Another exploration of disco and synthpop records I played around clubs back then. The picture is a rare glimpse of the setup I used to record mixes, and still use. A Yamaha Stereo Receiver I have since I was a teenager, plus Bang & Olufsen speakers from the 70s I got from my parents. Two Technics SL-1200 MK2s and an Ecler Smac First mixer I bought in 1995. Yes, I am not an audiophile person.

To be honest, I do not remember why I did this mix. I was probably in the mood for some bottom heavy 90s house from the US, yet again. The sound of your formative years, you never forget it. Just try to not get stuck in it, I suppose.

Sometimes it seems so strange now that there were times when mellow house music like this was played in clubs and people screamed with joy. Just listen and check back with yourself. Would you freak out to this? I certainly did, quite often. In crowds who felt the same at the same time. There is this subtle elegant swing to records like these. If a DJ puts it right, it can completely transcend the room. But I think it is great music to listen to anyway, independent of the setting you hear it in.

I always liked how in the early 90s there were so many great tunes that were hybrids between House and Techno, but nobody really cared about how to call it, and somtimes you could really not tell. It just fit both. This mix is a good impression of what I mean. A few years later what was actually Tech House was something different.
