Interview: Motor City Drum Ensemble

Die Divenschnipsel und die wohligen Flächen können bei vielen Trittbrettfahrern der House-Wiederkehr nicht darüber hinwegtäuschen, dass sich der aseptische Grundklang nur schwerlich mit den tradierten Grundfesten des Sounds vereinbaren lässt, und sich entsprechend auch nur rudimentär von der Preset-Beliebigkeit der TechHouse-Schwemme der letzten Jahre unterscheidet. In der Flut solcher Missverständnisse ragen schon seit geraumer die Produktionen vom Stuttgarter Boy Wonder Danilo Plessow heraus, der eben genau jene notwendige Emotionalität und Dreck in seine Tracks impft. Die Geschichte mit House und dem Feeling halt.

Wobei es eigentlich seit der Teenie-Genese von etwa Ron Trents Frühwerk nicht weiter verwundern sollte, dass jemand in jungen Jahren schon dieses Feeling aufweist. “Das Thema mit dem Alter ist zwar schon in Inverse Cinematics-Zeiten überstrapaziert worden, aber trotzdem: ich habe schon sehr früh angefangen, Musik zu machen. Erst am Schlagzeug, dann mit billigen Software-Sequencern. So sind die ersten Releases auf Pulver entstanden. Durch Jazzschlagzeug und die Liebe zu Hip Hop und das Finden von Samples begann die Suche nach Jazzplatten. Ich bin in einer Kleinstadt mit nur einem Plattenladen aufgewachsen, aber da der Typ auf Death Metal spezialisiert war, konnte ich mit Schülergeld an einige Schätze kommen. Unter meinen ersten fünf LPs waren John Coltranes “Love Supreme”, The Awakening auf Black Jazz Records und auch Moodymanns “Silent Introduction”, wobei mir letztere erst mit 15, 16 Jahren, nach dem ersten Clubbesuch, so richtig als Meisterwerk bewusst wurde. Das war noch in den Anfangszeiten des Internets, d. h. man hatte noch nicht die Möglichkeiten in Sekunden an jedes Release zu kommen, war auch gut so. Ich hatte also nur meinen kleinen Mikrokosmos aus wenigen Platten, die ich immer wieder hörte, und ich hatte Glück, die richtigen für mich zu erwischen.“ Read the rest of this entry »

Icasol – Ongou (Claremont 56)

DJ Mudds Spezialisten-Disco-Label hat sich einen Track vom deutschen Produzenten Icasol gesichert, der auch schon als Mujaba auf Four Roses Recordings ein paar funkelnde Deep House-Glanzlichter gesetzt hat. „Ongou“ hingegen ist ein lichtdurchfluteter Arpeggioboogie, der sich langsam über wohlige Strudel in einen stark erweiterten Bewusstseinszustand hinübergleiten lässt. Wer jemals über das Anschauen von Heißluftballons oder anderen freundlichen Schwebeobjekten über beeindruckender Landschaft ins Wonnedämmern geraten ist, ist hier mehr als gut aufgehoben. Die Idjut Boys verabschieden sich mit ihrem Remix vorerst von der eigenen Tradition von Disco in Dub, und markieren stattdessen tolldreist den vorläufigen Kulminationspunkt in Sachen überbalearischer, vollhippiesker Soft Rock-Ambience. Weit weit draußen.

Druffmix 01 – The Wild Places

2007 was the year D*ruffalo was born. It was a semi-anonymous collective and a webzine established to feature aspects of club and pop culture we loved and to terrorize anybody responsible for aspects of club and pop culture we did not love at all. It started on MySpace, of all places, and later we published on our own webspace druffmix.com, which ran on the server of the Innervisions label, until we made too much fun of them as well and they pulled the plug. So D*ruffalo is defunct, but you can still find traces via Wayback Machine or Instagram. Here are the people responsible for all the madness:

As soon as we started annoying people left and right we also founded a DJ team which was no less notorious. It was call the D*ruffalo Hit Squad, later described as:

“The D*RUFFALO HIT SQUAD is the official political arm of D*ruffalo – The Daily Excess Magazine (R.I.P.) that still goes public from time to time to wreck havoc on international dance floors.

“We drink. You dance!”

We also published the Druffmixes. A lot of them were done by me, and I will feature those here, with the original artworks by the D*ruffalo Graphic Squad (King Kummi) and liner notes.
