Ihr habt ja schon einiges erreicht, obwohl das Label noch gar nicht so lange existiert. Was euch damals dazu gebracht Permanent Vacation zu gründen?
Tom Bioly: Im Juni 2006 kam die erste Compilation raus, also fast drei Jahre her. Wir haben uns damals bei Benji im Plattenladen kennen gelernt. Dann haben wir festgestellt, dass wir beide die gleiche Musik super finden und das, was wir machen wollten, gab es nicht so richtig.
Benjamin Fröhlich: Vor allen Dingen in Deutschland gab es das nicht.
TB: Ich habe damals bei Compost gearbeitet und wusste wie man das macht, ein Label zu gründen und was dazugehört. Und dann hatten wir beide die Idee, das mal auszuprobieren.
BF: Eigentlich hatten wir beide unabhängig voneinander vorher schon so eine Idee, und dann war es die logische Konsequenz es zusammen zu machen.

TB: Stimmt (lacht). Wir beide kannten ja viele Leute, die in dem Bereich unterwegs sind, DJ-Freunde oder über Compost, aber es ist dann schon etwas Besonderes jemanden zu treffen, mit dem man bei Musik geschmacklich zu 99% auf einer Linie liegt. Das ist meistens nicht der Fall.
BF: Aber es ist auch schwierig so was zu machen, wenn man darüber streiten müsste was man macht.
TB: Was wir machen ist ja auch ein bisschen spezieller, nicht so der Konsens-Sound, oder der TechHouse-Bereich, wo man sich vielleicht besser einigen kann. Read the rest of this entry »
And yet another guest spot at Hamburg‘s cherished Betalounge location. Well I told you before how much I loved playing there. If, as usual, I was playing records there that I selected for a gig in town later, that gig was probably a good one, as it contains a lot of records I always loved to play. I remember people hanging out during my set there asking me about Minako’s “Town”, a Japanese disco gem. Hamburg clubbers are often very knowledgeable about music so that surprised me. Result!

Der finale Tusch der Neubearbeitungen zu Antenas Album “Camino del Sol”. Stimmig zusammengepackt die Mixe von Escort und Enne, die sich ziemlich genau an dem 80er-Jazzpop orientieren, den man damals ungnädig verstieß, als dieser etwas später nicht mehr nur mit Geschmäcklertum flirtete, sondern zu Acid Jazz verödete. Hier ist es aber noch die Vorstellung von Pool-Coolness und, aus denen etwa Everything But The Girls grandioses Debütalbum entsprang. „En Cavale“, das damalige Soloalbum von Antenas Isabelle, ging auch sehr kokett in diese Richtung weiter. Man kann zu alten Favoriten ja so ungerecht sein, da kommt das gerade richtig um die Wiedergutmachung einzuläuten. Der Prince Charming ist hier jedoch abermals der Mix von Pink Alert, der dir erst den Rücken eincremt und dich dann mit einem Gewinnerlächeln von der Liege ins Becken schubst. Der geheime Star unter den diesjährigen Sommerhits.
2007 was the year D*ruffalo was born. It was a semi-anonymous collective and a webzine established to feature aspects of club and pop culture we loved and to terrorize anybody responsible for aspects of club and pop culture we did not love at all. It started on MySpace, of all places, and later we published on our own webspace druffmix.com, which ran on the server of the Innervisions label, until we made too much fun of them as well and they pulled the plug. So D*ruffalo is defunct, but you can still find traces via Wayback Machine or Instagram. Here are the people responsible for all the madness:

As soon as we started annoying people left and right we also founded a DJ team which was no less notorious. It was call the D*ruffalo Hit Squad, later described as:
“The D*RUFFALO HIT SQUAD is the official political arm of D*ruffalo – The Daily Excess Magazine (R.I.P.) that still goes public from time to time to wreck havoc on international dance floors.

We also published the Druffmixes. A lot of them were done by me, and I will feature those here, with the original artworks by the D*ruffalo Graphic Squad (King Kummi) and liner notes.

Die Stücke von Antena, erstmals 1982 als Album auf dem Les Disques Du Crépuscule veröffentlicht, bieten einen prima Nährboden für Nachbearbeitungen zwischen Il Discotto, Amnesia-Rekapitulationen, Benelux-Wavepop und Gardasee-Discoexperimenten und diese sind hier alle auf dem Mannschaftsfoto versammelt und jonglieren die imaginativen Urlaubsimpressionen zum Beat. Joakim und Todd Terje stolzierten schon im Spotlight durch die Clubs, beispielsweise Lexx und Escort zogen angemessen nach und hier gibt es noch die würdige Nachhut obendrauf, in Form von den Chromatics, Enne, Steve Yanko (dessen “The Boy” Mix auch noch als 12″ rauskommt) und vor allem Pink Alert, die “Joppo+Eno” so freundlich dubpoppig und melodiegewandt in Balearik tunken, dass man nur dankbar sein kann für all die vorwiegend bewölkt aufgewachsenen Mitteleuropäer, die sich darbend früher, jetzt und zukünftig quer durch die Musikgeschichte zur Sonne komponieren. Die deutsche Entsprechung wäre vielleicht “Ich werde in der Sonne immer dicker” der Zimmermänner in den richtigen Händen, nur so als Vorschlag.
Das Label Permanent Vacation ist eine Adresse geworden, nach der man im Dunstkreis von Disco-Wiederkehr und zeitgemäßem Deep House Ausschau halten sollte. Noch haben die Kathy Diamond trifft Maurice Fulton Boogie-Wunderwaffe „All Woman“ und die schönen Antena-Remixe das Programm lange nicht verlassen, da folgt bereits Kathys neuester Treffer und ein Album soll im April folgen. Da kann man sich denn auch getrost drauf freuen, denn die Engländerin ist hier ebenfalls weit im Plus. Die Prelude-Andacht ist nun einem melancholischem House-Szenario gewichen, das sich in nächtlicher Totalaufnahme in ein pralles Drama aufschwingt. Man zeigt kongenial Mut zu dramatischem String- und Orgeleinsatz, ohne mit dessen Wucht den traurigen Trotz zu erdrücken. Wenn du den Club verlässt, und dir der Regen ins Gesicht peitscht, hast du das hier im Kopf.
