It’s Immaterial – Life’s Hard And Then You Die (Siren)

John Campbell und Jarvis Whitehead bewegten sich in einer skurrilen, von ihnen bis in das letzte Detail durchdesignten Parallelwelt zum aufgeregten Synthpop-Treiben von 1986. Ihren mittelgewichtigen Hit „Driving Away From Home“ hatten sie vermutlich nicht ganz aus Versehen, wie der schon sehr griffige Titel dieses Albums nahe legt. Man betrat beim Hören wie durch eine Luftschleuse ihren blaustichigen Episodenfilm, welcher mit einem Soundtrack ausgestattet war, der mit allen Stilelementen zwischen Country, Folk, Latin und New Wave versetzt werden konnte, ohne auch nur eine Sekunde diesen zugleich kühlen als auch heimeligen, vor allem aber irritierend unverwechselbaren Grundklang zu verlieren, zu dem Campbell mit dieser ausnehmend angenehmen Erzähl- und Singstimme verschiedene Szenarien durchspielte. Ob es um Ausfahrten in die Umgebung ging, Sinnkrisen von Vertretern, Freunde in der Kneipe, Abschwung in verregneten Industriegebieten, schwüle Straßenfeste in der Fremde, oder schlicht um den Raum den man zum Leben braucht, und wie man ihn ausfüllt, stets nimmt Campbell die Rolle des unmittelbaren Erzählers ein. Ein introvertierter Beobachter und voyeuristischer Melancholiker, der Situationen mit präzisen oder komplexen, wie auch ironischen oder versponnenen Worten so treffsicher nachfühlbar macht, dass man in jeden Song nach kürzester Zeit hineinfällt wie Alice in den Kaninchenbau, obwohl das Album eine stringente Atmosphäre hat, die gleichzeitig irgendwie distanziert und dennoch hermetisch ist. Vier Jahre später fuhren sie die Popverpflichtungen des Debüts bei ihrem zweiten, mindestens ebenso brillanten Album „Song“ auf ein Minimum herunter und reisten so tief in ihre eigene Welt, dass kaum noch jemand folgen mochte. Wahrscheinlich wäre es mal wieder dem einen Hit zu verdanken, wenn es nach all den Jahren noch jemand versucht. Aber Hauptsache, es versucht noch jemand.
